5 beginner tips to be more productive in Eco - Strange Loop Games

So you want to play Eco ? Want some advice to help you get through your first hour ?

Eco is a cooperative game which means every citizen contributes to victory, whether it is destroying the asteroid or designing a steam truck racing track. Reaching such goals takes a lot of time but there are several tricks you can use to improve your contribution to a server. Here we look at 5 basic tips that new players sometimes miss.

Run

I played once with a guy who complained about the time it takes to get downtown. We decided to work on a road together. When his tools were damaged, he left to repair them. I was puzzled to see him leaving at a painfully slow pace.

  • Are you pressing the “shift” button when you move ?
  • No, why ?

And then he was, moving as fast as everyone else on the server… shortly before he learned to jump like a little bunny over the vegetation.

Bulk transport

This one works like magic and is the basis for stockpile jumping and vertical mining strategies. Basically, when you move an item, holding “shift” moves every item of the same type. This means you can move the content of a full stockpile or chest in one action if all items are of the same type.

Inventory management

When you are back to your base with a full inventory, it takes time to put items in the right containers. If you have in your inventory an item type that is already in a container, you don’t have to carefully drag it to the tiny, exact square. Just hold “shift” while dragging the item to the general area of the container : it will automatically go where it belongs. Sometimes, this even works when double clicking on the item.

You can also right click on a container while having an item selected in your inventory. The selected item(s) will go there.

Another “shift” trick when you want to move only a few items is to click on a stack while holding “shift”. It will open a small window where you can select the number of items you want to pick. For a fast split, hold “ctrl” while you click on a stack.

Dedicated containers

Depending on the recipe, the workstation may not consume every resource at once. Therefore, when you craft something, make sure the material is not in your inventory (including backpack). Otherwise the order will stop after you leave the vicinity.

Also, when two work tables may use the same resources, it is good practice to make sure the tables do not use the same container. This can be done by interacting with the tables (pressing E), going to the “storage” menu and select/unselect the containers.

Plow the plan

Building is an activity that consumes a lot of time in Eco. Beginners tend to place some blocks, remove them, place them elsewhere etc. They also make too much or too little building material, etc.

One trick to help you save time is to plan your design using a wood hoe. For example, you may plow the squares where building corners will be. This way you make sure you have enough space and calculate the amount of building blocks needed in advance. This is mainly to help you focus and avoid going back and forth without doing something productive.

By the way test the shift, ctrl and alt key and you might discover other useful tricks, especially when adding work to a craft...
